Paddling in PA – What is Needed?

Paddling in PA – What is Needed?

With so many people looking to get out on the water, I figured it was time I finally did this video. One of the most asked questions I hear is “What do I need to get started paddling in the State of Pennsylvania?”

Whether you’re kayaking, canoeing or paddle boarding here is a quick rundown of what you’ll need.

Great video! I didn’t know about the day night signaling devices you mentioned at the end.

I’ve recently started hammock camping and I’m wondering where in Pennsylvania you could go hammock camping from a kayak in PA… Or at least how to figure out if that’s allowed?

I also wanted to comment on the PFD under the bungie cords. One of the best reasons for a good PFD is so that it’s comfortable enough that you’ll wear it, but when a PFD is stowed it’s required to be easily accessible. Tucked under a a bungie cord or two is okay, but they should never be tied to anything. That’s a violation, and could get you ticketed.

I’ll also suggest that anyone who thinks that they’ll stow their PFD and just grab it if they need it should try putting one on while they’re already in the water. Not to mention the possibility that yo might be injured and/or separated from the PFD if you unexpectedly find yourself in the water.

Can anyone tell me about County parks? We have DCNR launch permits, for our kayaks. We were told something different is needed for county parks, is this true?
