Javier, I just finished watching your video and enjoyed it immensely.

On a personal level, I have long known that you deeply enjoyed kayaking. But I had no idea that it had been such a transformative experience for you. It seems like you found a centering activity that fills you with purpose and intentionality that goes far beyond your professional concerns as a journalist and publisher. My friend, in this hectic, uncertain, and materialistic world, only a few favored souls ever achieve such a balanced sense of purpose and emotional connection with the natural environment and self. Javier you are a very fortunate man and I rejoice with you.

In my reading, this video was an immigrant’s homage to New York City. Your visual poetics are an ode to an adopted city that you savored as a Colombian immigrant who forged a sense of place and possibilities without negating your ancestorial roots. This comes though in the panoramic New York urban landscapes and the ambient Andean music that remind the viewer that your kayaking experience is an example of cultural hybridity and self-directed immigrant incorporation.

As I watched your kayaking video it brought to mind the 19th century poet Walt Whitman’s glorification of New York’s waterways and the immigrant experience. And in your own unique way the personal conquering of the city’s liquid networks represents the creation of community and the immigrant’s assertion of participation and place. Like Whiteman, your video can also proudly proclaim: “I am large, I contain multitudes.”
